Every town in the Santa Ynez Valley holds its own holiday kickoff, and in 2026 those kickoffs fall within five days of each other. The first Wednesday market night in Solvang is December 2. The Santa Ynez tree lights on December 3, Solvang's on December 4, and Buellton's and Mattei's Tavern's both on December 6. In between come the Julefest parade and the opening weekend of the Holiday Lights Festival in Buellton.
Solvang Julefest officially opens on November 27, the day after Thanksgiving, and runs until January 3, 2027. The festival's own planners still point people to the following week. The Visit Solvang Julefest page calls December 4 through 6 its "Tree Lighting weekend." If you live here, the first week of December takes some planning, because several events overlap.
Wednesday, December 2: The Weeknight Option Opens First
The first event of the week is the smallest. The Julefest Maker's Market opens on Wednesday, December 2, from 3 to 7 p.m. in Solvang Park, 1630 Mission Drive. It's modeled on European night markets, with local artisans, crafters and food vendors under string lights.
The Maker's Market sets up right beside the regular Solvang Farmers Market, so you can pick up produce and bread on the same trip. It runs every Wednesday through December 23, rain or shine. Of all the Julefest events, this one is easiest to fit into a normal week. It's on a weeknight and free to browse, and it comes back three more times after the busy weekend.
Thursday, December 3: Santa Ynez Goes Early
The town of Santa Ynez lights its tree a full day ahead of Solvang. Santa Ynez Country Christmas runs Thursday, December 3, from 4 to 6 p.m. The Santa Ynez Valley Foundation listing describes a free tree-lighting celebration with children's activities, Santa, holiday music, dance performances and treats.
The 4 p.m. start and the two-hour window make this the most school-night-friendly event of the week. None of the other tree lightings this week falls on Thursday. Friday is when the overlaps start.
Friday, December 4: Two Openings at Once
Solvang's tree lighting starts at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, December 4, in Solvang Park. Ballet dancers from Fossemalle Dance Studio perform, then there's live entertainment and caroling. The evening ends with the dancers circling the tree as it's lit, and lights come on across the whole park.
The same night, the SYV Holiday Lights Festival opens its fifth season at the Santa Ynez Valley Botanic Garden, 151 Sycamore Drive in Buellton. It's a ticketed event that supports the garden, with lights, carolers, local dancers, a holiday marketplace, fire pits with marshmallows, food trucks, free photos with Santa and rides for kids. The garden promises "new and exciting displays alongside your cherished favorites" this season.
The Lights Festival runs for three weekends, so missing opening night doesn't mean missing it:
| Weekend | Dates |
|---|---|
| Opening weekend | December 4–6, 2026 |
| Second weekend | December 11–13, 2026 |
| Final weekend | December 18–20, 2026 |
Buying online saves a little money. At the door, tickets are $35 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under. Online through the festival's ticketing page, they're $32.97 for adults and $17 for children, fees included, and children 2 and under get in free. The homepage lists hours of 5 to 9 p.m., but the ticketing information page says 5 to 8:30 p.m., so check before you plan a late arrival.
With two later weekends to choose from, families who want both events usually have an easy answer for Friday: Solvang Park that night, the garden another weekend.
Saturday, December 5: The Parade and the Carolers
Saturday is Solvang's day. The Julefest Parade runs from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. through the village streets, with marching bands, horses, dancers, classic vehicles and floats. The city expects more than 400 participants in over 50 contingents. Santa takes visits after the parade ends. This year's theme is "Nisser & Nordic Night." Groups, families and businesses that want to march sign up through Solvang Parks & Recreation. A nisse is a small, mischievous figure from Danish Christmas tradition.
In the evening, the Christmas Matters Holiday Carolers walk downtown Solvang from 5 to 8 p.m., weather permitting. They're back on the following Saturdays too: December 12 and 19. The Holiday Lights Festival is open in Buellton on Saturday night as well, so you can spend the morning at the parade and the evening at the garden.
Sunday, December 6: Two Towns, Same Day, Both With Snow
Sunday is the one day this week where you'll probably have to pick.
In Los Olivos, The Inn at Mattei's Tavern, 2350 Railway Avenue, holds its annual tree lighting from 4 to 6 p.m. The Santa Ynez Valley Foundation listing includes hot cocoa and warm cider, ornament decorating, Christmas cookies, live music, snow, stagecoach rides, a photo booth and a holiday marketplace of local artisans. Admission is $10 per person, and every ticket sale goes to People Helping People.
The same day, the City of Buellton holds Winter Fest at the Buellton Rec Center and River View Park. The Discover Buellton event page lists a free Holiday Village with local vendors and live entertainment, 20 tons of snow and a community tree lighting. New this year, the city will also host a holiday drone show. The same page notes that the Holiday Lights Festival runs at River View Park that evening as a separate ticketed event. You can buy garden tickets at Winter Fest or ahead of time online.
| Mattei's Tree Lighting | Buellton Winter Fest | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | The Inn at Mattei's Tavern, Los Olivos | Buellton Rec Center and River View Park |
| Cost | $10 per person | Free Holiday Village |
| Snow | Yes | 20 tons |
| What's different | Stagecoach rides, artisan marketplace | New city holiday drone show |
| Where the money goes | People Helping People | Next door: the ticketed Lights Festival benefits the Botanic Garden |
Mattei's has a firm 4-to-6 window, so doing both depends on Buellton's schedule, especially when the drone show starts. Check discoverbuellton.com for Winter Fest hours closer to the date before you promise the kids both.
After the Rush: What Stays on the Calendar
The busy week is over by December 7, but some of the most local-friendly events come after it:
- Maker's Market, Wednesdays December 9, 16 and 23. Same 3-to-7 p.m. hours next to the Solvang Farmers Market.
- Santa Paws, Saturday, December 12, 10 a.m. to noon. Therapy Dogs of America is back in Solvang Park for a third year with its holiday photo booth. Bring your own dog or pose with one of theirs. It's free.
- Holiday Lights, December 11–13 and 18–20. The two remaining weekends at the Botanic Garden, without any competing tree lightings.
- Copenhagen Countdown, Thursday, December 31, 2 to 4 p.m. The Molly Ringwald Project, an '80s tribute band, plays Solvang Park, and the crowd counts down with Denmark at 3 p.m. It's rain or shine.
On any of those Solvang evenings, Analogue Room is a newer stop in downtown Solvang. It's at Founder's Square, 1693 Mission Drive, Suite 105. The Santa Ynez Valley News reports that it combines a vinyl listening room, a record and bottle shop, a bar and the Side Hustle Pizza kitchen. Founder John Wright also started Standing Sun Wines, chef Joe Blanchard runs the kitchen and Blake Economus is general manager. It's a good place for pizza and a drink after the carolers on a Saturday or the market on a Wednesday.
At Crawford Speier, we follow the Santa Ynez Valley's calendar as closely as its market. If the holidays have you thinking about what your Solvang, Buellton or Los Olivos home is worth, request a home valuation and we'll send you a clear, local number before the new year.
