10 Winter Home Tasks You’ll Be Glad You Didn’t Skip

10 Winter Home Tasks You’ll Be Glad You Didn’t Skip

Stay ahead of winter maintenance with this top-10 home housekeeping checklist. From inspecting your heating system to reviewing your insurance coverage, these simple winter tasks will help keep your home clean, efficient, and well cared for all season long.

Here are our favorite tips to give your home a fresh start for the new year!

1. Inspect HVAC: Replace filters, check vents, and schedule a professional tune-up if needed. Breathing old dusty air... no thanks!

2. Test Smoke and CO2 Detectors: Replace batteries and ensure all alarms are functioning. Peace of mind is worth $10.

3. Inspect Attic and Insulation: Look for signs of moisture, pests, or inadequate insulation. It's hard to know if there is any issues unless you check! Since Santa Barbara doesn't get too much rain, you may not know there is an issue.

4. Clean Dryer Vent: Remove lint buildup to prevent fire hazards and improve efficiency. 34% of dryer fires are caused by dryer vents not being cleaned!

5. Review Home Safety Equipment: Check fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and emergency supplies. Let the whole family know where the emergency equipment is in your home.

6. Check Plumbing for Leaks: Inspect under sinks and around toilets for drips or moisture. And behind the washer!

7. Clean Grout and Tile: Remove mildew and reseal grout if necessary. It’s a good idea to replace or repair grout lines in the kitchen sink or showers. If there is a break in the grout, water is definitely getting in.

8. Review Homeowners Insurance: Update coverage if home improvements were made. Insurance is tricky right now in Santa Barbara - make sure you talk with your local rep. Confirm you are fully covered for today's costs (not 20 years ago when you bought your home!)

9. Plan Home Improvement Projects: Set budgets and timelines for spring renovations. Is it time to expand, remodel, or upgrade? This is a great time to plan out the year so you are prepared, schedule your contractors, and are ready to go!

10. Organize Home Documents: File receipts, warranties, and maintenance records. Taxes are coming up… and this is a great time to review the previous year and get all your docs in order (so you’re not rushing last minute… like me!)
